I guess we are all talking here about 3.5mm jacks (I've never seen an 
1/8" jack in UK)

One point to note is that certain 3.5mm jack sockets (e.g. Cliff part 
CL1384) do not work well with cheap far eastern jack plugs (e.g. like 
the cheap plastic ones Rapid sells) because the tips on these are 
slightly smaller and don't make good contact.  Cliff part CL13841 which 
is *almost* identical does not have this problem.
