I think the problem with having more stages of 4069s would be excessive 
noise.  Maths aside, from an aural point of view I think 3 stages is 
enough.  If you want to, you can increase distortion further by 
decreasing feedback at each stage.  And the sound can be made 'harder' 
by adding some clipping (e.g. overdriving the input so the protection 
diodes clip).
