Well, Ray Wilson "discovered" the LF442 and LF444. Here's his comment:
"... I am planning on re-evaluating all of my circuits with the LF444
(low power op amp). These things are great. You get decent slew rates and
much lower current consumption than with TL084s and TL082s. All of the
circuits in the Sound Lab together draws less than 6mA."

So, I don't know, maybe you want to encourage your students to use "modern",
low current devices? Something other than the good old TL-series, just for
the sake of originality.

Sidebar: The subject of low voltage modulars has come up on this list (I may
have started a thread on it), and maybe that is an angle that you'd like to
explore. We tend to use +/-15 or +/-12 volt supplies, but what about using
+/-5V or -- gasp! -- single 5V supplies? Maybe there would be
signal-to-noise problems, but perhaps that's not a real problem given the
lower noise of newer components. (My stereo system performs quite well using
1 volt "line level" signals.) I can understand your desire to be compatible
with other systems, though.

That's enough rambling from me! (Still a little tired from the weekend
festivities.)
