What about Mouser?
They claim that this item is a direct replacement for the CA3080E*
http://www.mouser.com/index.cfm?handler=displayproduct&lstdispproductid=347638
It is well under $2.00 each, is it unsuitable in some way I'm missing?
In general I don't know what effect these 4xxx series chips will have
on sound. I read an article on synth repair that pre 85 or so, 4xxx
chips were on a different micron standard which caused them to degrade
slowly over time until failing. I figured mine were either operating
poorly, on their way out, or already failed. Since the Chorus squelch
and articulator mode two were non-functional, I had some evidence to
support this theory.
Replacing all the other 4xxx IC's on the control board has, to my ear,
been a positive change largely resulting in reduced noise and better
filter performance. I have not noticed any negatives as yet. All that
is left for me to change is the 3080's.
I planned to order the NTE996's to replace all the ca3080's in my Opus
3, would that be a mistake? Since they are so cheap, I guess I can try
it and be the guinea pig for the group.
take care,
Steve
