The LM393 and LM339 are basically dual/quad of the same circuit.  The 
LM311, however, is a completely different animal.  The LM393/339 are low 
performance comparators.  The LM311 is a medium performance 
comparator.  The LM311 has a much more flexible output...The LM311 does 
take careful layout to keep it from oscillating, but it is difficult to 
use.  The 393/339 also takes careful layout, but no where near the degree 
that the 311 requires...
