Howdy,
back in the 80s i toured all over with a bar band
that played a lot of ZZ Top songs. I was using an
RE-201 for pseudo reverb(set properly it worked great,
in fact when the digital reverbs became affordable I
resisted them because they sounded too sterile), and
leaving the internal reverb on my peavey MarkII off.
During the first line of Gimme All Your Lovin, where
the guitar does that slide thing, i'd crank up the
spring reverb, lift the slider end of the board up 3
or 4 inches and drop the board right where the guitar
note was supposed to be. Made a lot of people jump out
of their seats a bit. The band loved it, the club
owners loved it and the mixer is still chugging
happily along. all this spring reverb talk got me to
remembering that. Using a spring reverb as a
percussive effect. VERY novel in it's day. At least
where we played. It was fun.
