An excellent primer!

I would also add that it's best to start the layout with the IC's, lay
them out in a grid so the power can run in neat lines underneath the
IC's.  For the two boards I've done so far I've been able to keep the
analog circuits at a right angle to the digital, no idea if this
actually helps much, but it does make for an easy to view layout.  I
can't find the exact link at the moment but Jim Patchell has a very
nice layout posted on his site which I spent a good deal of time
studying.
