For microphones that contain active electronics (condenser or
electret) the load shouldn't make much difference as long as it's
no less than 600 ohms.

For microphones that contain no electronics (dynamic), the
behaviour of the coil changes with the load. The SM-57 has been
said to sound better with preamps that load it down, allegedly
because that dampens some resonances.

Some preamps have an impedance switch. One lets you choose between
300 ohms and 1.2 kiloohms, IIRC.
