Two stacked (Schottky) diodes in blocking direction between GND and 5V
and the input connected through midpoint of the two diodes. There must
be some current limiter in the input (read a resistor), but the
impedance should not be exceedingly high, otherwise noise and the
voltage dependent capacitance from the diodes will degrade the signal.
The diode arrangement is available in multiples as IC for bus
protection.
