I actually had the same thought for a Dallas Rangemaster clone that I 
built as a guitar effects pedal. I wanted a really retro look for 
something which is unbelievably basic technology. In the end I used a 
yellow/orange led, and only put a bit of current through it.

Blue is quite nice, but this "Blue is new! blue is cool!" thing is a 
bit crazy. I remember when green seemed just as cool for exactly the 
same reason...
