Partially. Also simply slightly different frequencies.

IIRC, this is equivalent to having two the two one dimensionally vibrating
strings.

The string is supported by the bridge and nut so it essentially rests
horizontally on two metal bars. This makes it slightly longer in one
polarity than the other. Now that I think of it more, I'm not 100% sure
about the stiffness (that's what you get for replying to mails immediately
after coming home from a bar).
