Been doing that for years. I use a low-MIPS diskless, fanless PC
configured as an X terminal, running applications on a "normal" PC
sitting in another room.

Mine is a Cyrix/VIA C3 on a normal socket 370 motherboard (Abit
VH6T) but there are other choices. Mini-ITX motherboards fitted
with more recent C3 or Pentium M processors...
