Hi Geoff,

Senso's site gives the following:

     uPD8048-305      Roland CR-8000
     uPD8048HC-520    Roland CR-8000 (replaces D8048-305)
     uPD8049-159      Roland CR-5000, CR-8000
     uPD8049-232      Roland CR-5000, CR-8000 (replaces D8049-159)

Looks like there are two CPUs in the CR8000, and that each was updated at 
some point during production.
