I guess the key word here is compact. But then that is the one reason I 
don't like matrices that much - they're too small for me.

I prefer a well laid out panel with sensible switch based routing. The 
switches should be placed in a logical position, ie. VCF mod source in 
the VCF section. The Yamaha CS30 is a good example, the Synton Syrinx 
another. Of course, practicalities mean that you can't connect anything 
to anything, but many possibilities are not terribly useful.

The EMS matrix is however considerably easier to use than the non 
summing patch panel on the ETI synths. That one is really frustrating 
because you need to patch things into the mixer modules before feeding 
them into the modulation inputs

But then we're all different, and we all like different things. I would 
swap an AKS for a LAMM any day.
