I've been running X on my Amiga3000UX (68030/25, 18MB) and it worked 
great.

That's the point. Use twm, tvtwm, fvwm, windowmaker, and avoid any 
"modern" window manager like the plague -- especially KDE (which is my 
preferred window manager, but it nevertheless sucks on machines with 
lesser memory).
