I use matlab firls() myself. Windowed sinc with hanning window might give 
decent results too. For the _output_ filter you want a half-band FIR since 
that way every other sample is direct copy from input and you only need to 
filter the other sample. I'll send example filter coefficients off-list in 
a minute.
