More common is Magnesium together with traces of rare-earth metals. If
you've ever wondered about that seemingly useless metal ring in the top
of your tube: this is where the getter pill is placed before the tube
sealing process starts. After the tube is pumped down and sealed (this
is where the pointy end comes from), the top of the tube is still
red-hot. The tube is then held upside-down, the getter pill falls into
the top and melts and the tube is carefully turned to distribute the
molten metal evenly. This gives the nice "mirror" top of the tube.
