I havn't had much to say on this (apart from my
suggestion that switching spikes from one oscillator
may be pulling other oscillators in subtle ways) but,
here's another thought: 1/F (flicker) noise in analog
gear.
Normally, one cares not about this... it's usually below audio.
But, below audio is where CV lives. I expect that some
devices (particularly old semis) are exhibiting a LOT of this &
while it averages out when you hang a multimeter on the test point,
it could have considerable effects to the audio generated.
Psychoacoustically, the ear is very sensitive indeed to phase shifts,
because it is relative phase (and, in monaural cases, phase shift over time)
that tells you exactly where that sabre tooth tiger is moving near you.

The term 'fatness' is so debased & imprecise, that it might as well be
replaced by 'interesting'. And for a key to what is 'interesting', I think
evolution & psychoacoustics has much to suggest. Note the way that
a cat will sleep undisturbed in a studio while all manner of sounds
are generated, and then jump up when something'interesting' is heard.
The 'cat test' is a very powerful one, if you want to know if a patch
is useful.
