Speaking of beat amplitude changes:

I think one important factor for "warm" sounding synthesizer sounds is that
a filter in overdrive (soft clipping) will reduce the amplitude effects of
two (or more) beating oscillators. This allows for a higher amount of
detuning before the effect becomes unpleasant.

A similar thing happens on the PWM of Yamaha CS50 / 60 / 80
synthesizers: The PW range is limited to something like 10 ... 90%
(for the _combination_ of initial PW and LFO modulation).
So you can setup a PWM that creates movement only for a certain
time within one LFO cycle. You get a rather fast transition (dPW/dt)
withouth a fast repetition rate.
