[sdiy] Digging into Eagle, resistor package sizes, etc.

So, I thought it was time I try learning a PCB layout program.

I chose Eagle since several folks recommended it, and more importantly it
runs on X11 on a Mac. Unfortunately, it works little like an actual Mac
application and therefore drives me batty, but I'm getting used to it. (In
one class at Wash U back in undergrad days we had to use something called
CAPFAST. I called it CRAPFAST. I just hated it. It worked with a machine
that had a mouse but had zero relationship to any other GUI I had ever
used.)

For the L of it, I'm laying out the noise source from the OB-Mx. I'm gonna
just tie the reset pins on the 74HC164 high.

After a good hour of searching, I finally found where the resistors live,
in the "rcl" library (I kept going through things called "resistor," but
they were more specialized, like resistor arrays and such.)

So, there's various sizes, like 204, 207 309, 411, 414, 613... what
corresponds to the bog standard through-hole 1/4" watt resistor?

Also, there's choices of how far out you want the leads to go, like
207 has a choice of total widths of 7, 10, 12, and 15 grid spacings...
what do people prefer?

There's a bewildering variety of capacitor types. If one hasn't
particularly picked out a particular cap in advance, are there good
"generic" choices?

Thanks!

- Aaron
