I'll try and respond to everyone here.
I found the problem and it's fixed now. It was a loose wire from the power
supply to the pcb with the motor regulator. I entirely disassembled it
before I figured this out. Very interesting contraption!
Roy, you gave me advice to switch the two caps when I was fixing my MXR EQ.
Great advice that worked like a charm in that case. It will be very
difficult to do in this case. The power pcb is packed and all wiring
(dozens) are connected to component leads on the reverse side of the board.
It was hard to even get test leads in there to take measurments!
It's likely the loads are different. One circuits controls a few relays to
switch SOS on and off and turn overdub function on and off. The other
circuit fuels the motor. I assume the motor is more demanding.
I'm making an order from Mouser and the cost jumps a lot for higher voltages
of caps. I think I'm going with 25V or 35V (I think the 35V are actually
cheaper than 25V). It's Multivox, too, and I don't think of them as a 'high
end' manufacturer (i.e.: they were pinchin' pennies). Rolands sound better
to my ears but the Multivox completely blows them away as far as features
go.
I'd like to explore a DIY tape echo. Circuits controlling mechanical
things, spinning things is really interesting. Is anyone doing this?
