[sdiy] OT - Anybody know UHER 8-pin DIN microphone connections?

I bought a cheap UHER 4400 Report Monitor a few years ago, but it has
taken me forever to use it. Now I have both a heap of 'D' batteries and
Panasonic electret capsules, so I want to get it going. I live not far
from a salt marsh, and in the early morning the birds there sound
amazing.
I was lucky that three years ago or so, a nice old British guy wrote to
me with the specs of how they made adaptors at the BBC for XLR, and
what the various pins did. I had saved the email as a "WAFF" file but
now that I need it, it appears to be corrupted. (since then I make PDFs
and/or verify my web archives as to not lose data) So I am kicking
myself!
There are a few people online who offer adaptors from the locking 8-pin
DIN jack to XLR, but supposedly one of the wires from the DIN jack can
supply a few volts for electrets, which I want to do. I have tried
tracing the connections myself, but everything is crammed so tight in
there I'd have to completely disassemble the unit to see, and I'd
really rather not mess up any of the mechanics in there. If anybody out
there knows about mics for the UHER portables I'd love to hear some of
the details.
TIA
CJ
