[sdiy] dumb question about transformers

So I am build a PSU that can't really deliver more than 600mA (uses LM7912's 
and LM7812 regulators).
 I have a 24 VCT transformer hooked up to it that is rated at 1A. Should I 
be putting a 1A fuse at the XFRM input or should I put a smaller value?
Just worried about safety...
