[sdiy] need PCB layout for a +/-9V DC supply

Hi there,
  I am just getting into synth design. I have completed a few small projects
(latetst was a 303 called the x0xb0x) and now I am making my own version of
the Sound Lab Mini-Synth.
 For this project I need a +/- 9V DC supply. I have no experience making
PCBs (but I have just bought the chemicals and equipment to do so) and would
prefer to use a PCB layout that has been tried and tested.
 One option is to use http://www.cgs.synth.net/modules/cgs14_psu.html PCB
for a +/-15 VDC supply and replace the regulators with 7809 and 7909s. I
could then hook up a 24V CT transformer to it.
 I assume it is a good idea to build an external power supply... should the
transformer and the power supply circuit all be in one small box? Is there a
wallwart style transformer I could get that has a center tap? (instead of
mounting the transformer in the power supply box). Is an XLR cable a good
way to connect +9, 0 and -9 to the synth?
  any help is greatly appreciated! I am just a beginner but I plan to learn
as much as I can and increase the complexitiy of my designs.
 cheers,
 Danjel [VANCOUVER}
