My Uncle is a Chemist for GE that works specifically with plastics.
He has worked over the years to develop a number of products such as
a replacement plastic for LEGO (tm) that has a smaller waste factor,
due to a reduced number of discarded molecules being produced in the
manufacturing process... He might have some suggestions for
materials that is easy to work with that would also have a fair life time.
