Actually my plan was to do so (use the DAC for adjustment and compensation).

In Hal Chamberlin's book there is an example of VCO performance. After
calibration the frequency is 0.19% (3.3cents) off in the middle of the
range, and the temperature drift is 0.11% (1.9 cents) per degree Celsius
between 25 and 35 degC. So with a temperature difference of only 5 degC
the tuning would already be 13 cents off. He calls this "nearly perfect".
I wonder if VCOs can be made much more accurate these days?
