I've done some stuff like this with Csound (not easily, since Csound
lacks
proper bit manipulation operators, but it is possible). One interesting
operation is, instead of bit reduction where you zero out all the bits
to the right of a given bit, just jam that one bit. Jam it with a
constant
1 or 0, or invert it. Produces some very interesting distortion effects
where the distortion varies in non-obvious ways with the level of the
input signal. Sometimes it sounds almost like a flanger whose delay
time is dependent on the level of the input signal.
