This is the method I employ in my Aztec Processor. It works very well except 
that you must use 2 3914s to get 8 or more bits. This is due to overlap in 
the outputs. IE my Aztec will digitize a signal to 5 bits using one 3914. 
The overlap also introduces switching artifacts into the signal which 
manifest as short pulses on the edges of each step.
The new version of the Aztec will be posted soon for those interested in 
digitizing type effects.
