It's usually pretty standard (in my experience) to have plated through
holes, because otherwise you might find situations where you need to
solder on  BOTH sides at the one hole, and that can be damned awkward.

but yes, the guys who do my boards could give me a double sided board
without the plated holes, if i asked.

Incidentally, the question of track thickness.....even a solid copper
bussbar
one metre square has resistance, and I've had more trouble (in synth
circuits)
with error voltages developing along traces, than overheating. In one case I
had to
do a fix-up by soldering a chunk of 4mm copper wire along a trace, felt
pretty
stupid about that!
