[sdiy] What is filter squelch?

So there's nothing going on like gating/squelching the resonance feedback?
In a lot of soft synthesizers, especially old 303-like ones, there's a
control for squelch or similiar, which makes the filter more squelchy, and
sound more like a 303 (to my ears). What do these generally do? Do they clip
the feedback, make the cutoff envelope affect the q, or something entirely
different?
