Not quite that bad. And it can be significantly improved by using a
higher-resolution DAC (same pinout). A couple of other improvements have
been mentioned in the past as well. It will never be as good as a
well-designed unit based on a 14-16 bit convertor but you get what you pay
for. If you're not going to be using it for polyphonic synthesis it may be
all you need for now.
Because it's based on an MPU with external memory it's a bit more complex
than a PIC or AVR-based device. Also you'll need to burn an EPROM if you're
taking the bare board route. And watch out for the backwards DIP switch.
