Try removing the 1N4744 and the LED and see if the
sound changes.

The 1N4744 is a 15V zener diode. As shown in your
schematic it can't be doing much at 5V supply.

The LED will should not be in conduction with the
1N914 in the circuit as shown. Its possible that the
1N
914 is defective (open)... then the LED would do
something.
