Naw its not abusive to the transistor with the 400K collector load :^P
And if you use the 220pF cap it won't load the source too badly either.

As you slip in the resistor you mention (which I admit thinking that same
idea) you will get better gain, but worse clipping.

No reason not to just 'go for it' as you say.   I remember taking a twin-tee

design from a magazine app note, and making what was the coolest fuzz-wah
by sticking a guitar input on it. One transistor groovedness !!!
