This is another good resource for DIY effects-making:

the archives have many schematics and the forumites are very helpful.
Look for a distortion circuit that will leave your bass frequencies
intact...
you might even want to build it as a standalone box so that you have room
for multiple controls...
the better distortions (IMO) will have multiple adjustable parameters to
dial in the perfect sound.
