[sdiy] distort me!

hi,

i ordered a x0xb0x kit a couple of days ago and i really look forward to 
build and play this thing.
now, almost everyone knows that a 303 (or a clone, in this case) and a 
distortion effect can inject instant acid into the eardrum ;) , thus i 
am interested in integrating a distortion circuit into the box.
where to look for something appropriate?
when i googled for schematics i found 
http://www.runoffgroove.com/articles.html , they have schematics for 
guitar distortion units as far as i can tell. the one called "mockman" 
caught my interest since i have all the parts at hand.
should i give it a try? would the unit be too noisy for an analog synth? 
i didnt have the time yet to actually build and hear for myself...

so, if anyone has suggestions for a simple yet effective (both in sound 
and costs) distortion i´d be really happy to hear them!
