Just use shorter samples.

Art of Noise was way more creative with sampling technology than most of
today's musicians with literally Gigabytes of samples at their hands.

If using a simple 7+1 scheme, i.e. after 7 7-bit packets comes the 8th
packet containing the missing 8th bits, you get around 2734 bytes
(3125*7/8) per second without further encoding tricks.

Nothing you want to transmit 1MB of data over (384 seconds), but for
average samples we considered sufficient 20 years ago it's just a
measly 1.5 (4kB) to manageable 24 (64kB) seconds.

I mean ... If all you want to do is sample playback, than you don't need
a DSP machine. The home PC fill fit in nicely.
