CS-80? Which Boards of Canada tracks?
The main BoC synths that I can determine by ear are an SH-101 (all over the place - check out most leads on MHTRTC, and bassline on Roygbiv), and a Minimoog. Most of the pads sound like they are played on a sampler. Other gear I have heard about them using are the Akai S-1000 sampler, Ensoniq APS sampler, Ensoniq DP/4 effects, Yamaha DX7.

Subject: [sdiy] poor man's alternative to a CS-80?
I was wondering what synth would be a considerably cheaper option to the CS-80 but capable of simmilar lush pads a la Boards of Canada?
The obvious solution is the Atrutria Cs80 vsti but I would like a hardware version, somethign I can possibly build.
Any ideas?
cheers,
Danjel
