"Thrown out" is a euphemism for "removed from the inventory list"
i.e. taken home by grad students or professors or sold off
I bought six Buchla modules from the Michigan University System  
Distribution Center.
It took 18 months from when I submitted a bid until I received the  
modules (sometime in the 80s).
