Thank you Magnus for your answer.  I'm going to leave it with the unused 
I/O pins not connected for now, rather than messing up the PCB with 
connections I might have to desolder one day to expand the number of 
outputs.

Since it is in a case, no fingers are likely to touch the unconnected 
pins, so I think I will risk it.  I always ground myself when working 
inside the case.
