Yep, it's not uncommon with microcontrollers.

If you have also external ROM, you're sometimes lucky -- e.g. when the 
interrupt service routine resides in external ROM, then all you need to 
do is burning your own ROM which then takes over the system and reads 
out the internal program data, dumping it e.g. via MIDI.

IIRC, Oliver "Musitronics" Schwarz did it that way when developing the 
PCM.EX for the SY77.
