I agree that you want linear taper if you're controlling the frequency CV of
an exponential response VCO.

On the other hand, if you're controlling the frequency CV of a *linear*
response VCO -- or directly controlling the frequency of such an oscillator
(i.e. the pot is the "R" in the RC circuit) -- then an audio taper is
better. An example of this would be the frequency control for a simple
7555-based osc.
