[sdiy] SSM2044 questions

I've had some 2044s for a while and keep meaning to build a standalone
filter box. Nothing fancy, just an in/out and cutoff/res knobs. I've
looked at the datasheet for the example circuit and I'm trying to
figure out the best way to power this thing. By all accounts, these
things will run on +/- 9v, so I could probably do the dual battery
option but wondered if any of you have done something like this before
and any ideas you have.

I'm sure I'll need to amplify the audio input but would I also add some
sort of amplification on the output? I've also toyed with the idea of a
simple 555 LFO to modulate things a bit.

Thanks.
