Well, then they should create individual PDFs from your source text
which embed specific watermarks and other nastinesses to at least make
it less attractive for the average Joe to copy and spread that 
file -- cause it will tell that it was him.

Of course this doesn't help against "hardcore pirates". But neither 
do hard protection schemes.

It depends on your definition of synth DIY :)

Take Paul Maddox for instance, who moved from a "real" machine to a
DSP-based software model of that very machine. Doesn't require
soldering, but the essence of the original project -- recreating the PPG
sound and possibly extending the original's capabilities -- is still
there.

But even if soldering is an integral part of synth DIY to you, then I
guess there will be other parts coming which can be used and tweaked for
musical purposes. It's just that the ones we know and grew accustomed to
are on the brink of extinction.
