As a newbie, I've got to ask what is all the hype about?  Is there no other
amp that will work, or maybe even combination of other components that will
do the same job?  Seems like the same thing applies to all those SSMxxxx
chips too, or maybe I am confused. 

Not meaning to stir the pot...

No, but considering this guy was starting his auctions at $4/10 a few 
weeks ago...it's surprising what the market is willing to pay for them 
once they've been obsoleted.

P.S., I'll be glad to sell some from my personal stash for $5 each. ;-)
