Karl, Are you certain that was the only problem? Considering that the 4001 and 4011 both have the same pinout (from the standpoint of being quad 2-input gates), and have similar max ratings, seems it would be difficult to "make them pop" like that unless they were operated beyond max ratings, or the chip was bad to start with. ???
