Asking if you can "bum a fag" in Britain will most likely result in being
given a cigarette, or maybe not, but either with no offence.
 
This is probably not advisable in other English - speaking parts of the
world if you actually just want a quiet smoke... :-)

There has to be a comedy sketch in here somewhere, although sadly, I doubt
if there are any amusingly different synth terms.
