It means a part that is not part of the original circuit, but is wired to the
board. It mainly refers to a DIP IC, glued *upside down* on the pc board (legs
sticking up in the air, like a 'dead bug') so you can solder wires to it. You
will see my resistor over my the 1V/Oct trim pot (it's soldered across the
scaling op amp).
