[sdiy] And another dumb question ( LM394 related )

On some datasheets for parts, like the LM394 and the CA3039 and others, but
only some companies datasheets for their own versions, a company will show a
phantom diode across a couple pins of the parts in the chip ( on the LM394CH
there is a diode shown from emitter to base of each transistor ).

I was wondering how this affects using the part.  I figure it has to do with
a connection to the substrate, I just dont know what design considerations 
have to come of it.
