[sdiy] Paint restoration - achieving the right finish?

I know some would object to restoration of paintwork, but I don't really subscribe to that school of thought, so...

A lot of synths seem to be painted in black, using a paint that isn't gloss, and isn't really matt either.  I think itlld be called vinyl silk or something if you were putting it on walls.

Any suggestion as to what family (ie acrylic, enamel, watercolour ; ) I should investigate to achieve this finish again on chipped and bashed metalwork?
