Or you can self-clock by sacrificing one multiplexed channel to a
"just out of range" signal, or characteristic tone or whatever.
There is an obvious advantage to having a controller signal
that in its pre-decode form can be stored as a standard audio signal.
The next argument will be, how high need the CV bandwidth go?
